Acne Scars
Acne scars come in several forms: rolling, boxcar, icepick and flat marks or redness left behind. No single treatment suits all of them, so a plan usually combines two or three methods. The budget question is which methods, in what order and over how many months.
Common causes
- Deep or prolonged inflammatory acne that damages collagen
- Picking or squeezing lesions, which deepens the injury
- Loss of tissue, producing depressed (atrophic) scars
- Excess tissue forming raised scars in some people
- Delayed treatment of active acne
How doctors usually approach it
- Classify the scars
- The doctor identifies the type and depth, since icepick scars, rolling scars and flat marks call for different tools and different costs.
- Release and fill
- Tethered rolling scars may need subcision, while some depressions are lifted with a collagen-stimulating injectable.
- Resurface
- Fractional lasers or microneedle radiofrequency remodel texture over a series of visits.
- Target icepick scars
- A focused acid technique is used on narrow, deep scars and is repeated at intervals.
- Treat marks and redness
- Pigment and vascular lasers or boosters address color, which is a separate item from depth.

Budgeting for acne scars: how plans are priced
Scar plans rarely use a single line. A typical quote may include a resurfacing session count, a subcision visit, an injectable and a booster, each with its own unit: sessions, shots, cc or vials. Ask the doctor to list the steps in order and to say which are essential and which are optional. Comparing two clinics is only fair when both list the same steps.
The cost curve is front-loaded for some methods and spread out for others. Resurfacing sessions are spaced a month or more apart, and the improvement builds gradually. That means prepaid packages may span longer than a stay in Korea. Ask whether the plan can be split across trips, and whether a downtime-heavy step needs to be scheduled early or late in the visit.
Be cautious about promises of full removal. Scars improve to a degree that varies by person and type, and deep scars often retain some visible texture. Expect side effects such as redness, crusting, swelling and pigment change after resurfacing, and plan for the cost of aftercare. A staged approach, beginning with the step the doctor thinks will help most, keeps spending proportionate to what you actually see.
Acne Scars: common questions
Why do scar quotes include several treatments?
Different scar types respond to different methods, so plans combine steps. Ask for each one to be listed with its unit and count.
How long does a scar plan take?
Usually several months, with sessions spaced weeks apart. Your doctor can estimate after seeing the scars.
Is it better to pay for the whole plan at once?
Not necessarily. Paying in stages lets you see the response and adjust.
Can acne scars be removed completely?
Improvement is the realistic aim. Results vary and some texture often remains.
