IV Vitamin Therapy

IV vitamin therapy delivers fluids, vitamins and minerals directly into a vein. It is a medical procedure, not a skin treatment, and its effect on skin appearance is not well established. If you are considering it, the quote should be read as a list of ingredients and services rather than as a promise of results.

How it works

A nurse or doctor inserts a thin catheter into a vein, commonly at the forearm, and attaches a fluid bag containing selected vitamins, minerals or other components. The infusion runs slowly over the session. Because the contents bypass digestion, blood levels of some nutrients rise faster than with a pill. For most healthy people who eat a balanced diet, a benefit from extra vitamins has not been shown, and claims about brighter skin or improved energy are not supported by strong evidence. The infusion is mainly useful where a real deficiency or a medical reason has been identified.

Who it may suit

  • People with a documented deficiency whom a doctor has advised to receive an infusion
  • Adults who want to discuss hydration or recovery with a doctor and accept that evidence is limited
  • Those who cannot take specific nutrients by mouth, as judged medically
  • Patients who have had a health review before choosing ingredients
  • Not a substitute for skin treatments, sleep, diet or sun protection

The treatment day

  1. Health review. The doctor asks about your medical history, medicines, allergies and any kidney, heart or liver conditions.
  2. Ingredient choice. The contents of the bag are selected and checked for suitability.
  3. Cannula placement. A sterile catheter is placed in a vein and connected to the bag.
  4. Infusion and monitoring. The drip runs for the planned time while staff watch for reactions, then the catheter is removed.

Aftercare

  • Press on the needle site as instructed to reduce bruising
  • Drink water unless the doctor has limited your fluids
  • Do not drive or exercise heavily if you feel lightheaded
  • Avoid repeating infusions without medical advice
  • Seek care for fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty or a swollen, painful arm

Things to know first

  • Bruising, soreness and irritation at the needle site are common, and vein inflammation or infection can occur
  • Allergic reactions, fluid overload and imbalances in blood minerals are possible
  • Kidney, heart or liver disease, G6PD deficiency, pregnancy and some medicines can make certain ingredients unsafe
  • High doses of some vitamins can cause harm, so more is not better
  • It should be given by trained staff in a clinical setting, and it is not a skin treatment

What the price of IV therapy depends on

The bag is the unit, and what is inside the bag is the cost driver. A basic hydration bag, a vitamin C or B-vitamin mix and a bag with several added ingredients differ in the number of components and in the doctor's review time. Ask for the ingredient list and the dose of each, and ask which ingredient is meant to address which concern. If a line cannot be explained, it is hard to justify.

The second variable is the people and the setting. Some quotes include a doctor's review and nurse monitoring; others show only the bag. Ask whether a health screen is part of the visit, how long the infusion runs and who stays with you. Extras such as add-on ampoules or a take-home supplement kit should appear as their own lines and are optional.

Be cautious about packages of repeated drips. There is no standard schedule that suits everyone, and buying many sessions in advance commits you to repeated infusions before you know how you react. Treat this as a medical decision made with a doctor rather than as a beauty routine, and confirm the VAT status and the refund terms if the doctor advises against it on the day.

IV Vitamin Therapy: common questions

Why do IV drips vary so much in price?

Ingredients, doses, infusion time and the level of medical review differ. Ask for the full list and compare like with like.

Will an IV drip improve my skin?

Evidence for visible skin benefit in healthy people is weak. The doctor can explain what, if anything, is reasonable to expect.

Is a package of drips a good idea?

Not as a default. Start with a doctor review and a single session if infusion is advised at all.

Is the doctor consultation included?

Sometimes only the bag is quoted. Ask whether a health screen and monitoring are part of the line.
