TCA CROSS for Icepick Scars

TCA CROSS targets narrow, deep icepick scars with a small amount of strong acid. The price question is how many scars are treated per session and how many sessions are planned.

How it works

The doctor places a very small amount of concentrated trichloroacetic acid inside each narrow scar using a fine tip. The acid causes a controlled injury at the base, and the body rebuilds collagen to lift the scar. A frosting reaction appears briefly and a small dark crust forms for about a week. Cost depends on the number of scars, the acid concentration and the number of sessions. Results vary by person.

Who it may suit

  • Narrow, deep icepick scars
  • Small boxcar scars where the doctor judges it suitable
  • People who can follow sun protection strictly
  • Those who accept a series of short visits

The treatment day

  1. Scar mapping. The doctor counts and marks the scars for treatment.
  2. Cleansing. The skin is cleaned and degreased. Numbing is often not used.
  3. Acid application. A small amount of acid is placed in each scar. Brief stinging is typical.
  4. Instructions. You receive care instructions for crusts and sun protection.

Aftercare

  • Small dark crusts fall off within about five to seven days
  • Do not pick them
  • Use gentle moisturizer and strict sunscreen
  • Avoid strong actives until the skin has healed
  • Contact the clinic for spreading redness, pus or lasting dark marks

Things to know first

  • Temporary or lasting darkening, redness, and worsened scarring are possible if overdone
  • Darker skin tones have a higher risk of pigment change
  • Isotretinoin use, pregnancy and active infection usually mean waiting
  • It is not for broad, shallow scars
  • Several sessions are normal and results vary by person

What the price of TCA CROSS depends on

The usual units are the number of scars and the number of sessions. A short list of icepick scars is a small job, while dozens across both cheeks lengthens the visit. Ask whether the price is per session or per scar and how the clinic counts them.

The acid itself is inexpensive, so a high price tag should reflect the doctor's time and skill rather than the product. The amount charged may differ if the plan combines TCA CROSS with another scar treatment. Ask for each part itemized.

Plan for repeat visits several weeks apart, because the skin must heal between sessions. Check the consultation fee, aftercare creams, tax and the terms of any package. If a scar does not respond after a few rounds, ask what alternatives the doctor would offer and at what cost.

TCA CROSS for Icepick Scars: common questions

Is it priced per scar?

Some clinics do, and others charge per session. Ask how the count is defined.

Why is it often cheaper per visit than lasers?

It uses little equipment and a short visit. Total cost still depends on the number of sessions.

How many sessions are typical?

Often three to five, but it varies by person.

Does it work for all acne scars?

No. It is aimed at narrow, deep scars and not at broad, shallow ones.
