Subcision for Acne Scars

Subcision releases tethered scars from beneath the skin. It is a procedure, not a device treatment, so cost reflects the doctor's time, the area and the number of sessions.

How it works

After local anesthetic, the doctor passes a fine needle or small blade under a depressed scar to break the fibrous bands that pull the skin downward. The released skin may rise as bleeding and healing fill the space, and new collagen forms over weeks. It suits rolling scars and some boxcar types, not all kinds of scars. Cost depends on the number and extent of scars, the anesthesia and the plan for combining it with other treatments. Results vary by person.

Who it may suit

  • Rolling acne scars
  • Tethered, depressed scars that appear to be pulled down
  • People who are prepared for bruising
  • Those planning a combination approach with other scar treatments

The treatment day

  1. Marking scars. The doctor marks suitable scars. The number of marked scars is useful for your quote.
  2. Local anesthesia. An anesthetic is injected in the area.
  3. Release. The needle is moved under the scar to release the bands. Pressure is applied to limit bleeding.
  4. Dressing. The area is cleaned and sometimes covered, and instructions are given.

Aftercare

  • Bruising and swelling can last one to two weeks
  • Apply cold compresses as advised
  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements if the doctor advises
  • Keep the area clean and avoid makeup briefly
  • Report severe pain, lumps, fever or pus

Things to know first

  • Bruising, swelling, tenderness, nodules, infection and uneven results can occur
  • Blood thinners and bleeding disorders need discussion
  • Pregnancy and active acne in the area usually mean waiting
  • It does not help every scar type, and other procedures may be needed
  • Results vary by person

What the price of subcision depends on

The key variable is the extent of the work. A few scars on one cheek is a smaller job than both cheeks with many scars. Some clinics quote by the area treated and some by the length of the session, so ask which method applies to your quote.

Subcision is often paired with another step to keep the released skin from reattaching or to improve texture, such as a filler-like biostimulator, laser or microneedling. Each of these has its own pricing. Ask for the combination itemized and whether the combined plan changes the per-step figure.

Finally, check anesthesia, the consultation fee, dressings, tax and the number of visits. Since results build over weeks, a follow-up visit to judge whether another session is needed should be clearly covered or clearly priced.

Subcision for Acne Scars: common questions

How is subcision charged?

Typically by area or session. Ask how scar count and extent affect the quote.

Is it usually combined with something else?

Often, yes. Each added treatment has its own price.

Will I need more than one session?

Possibly, depending on the scars and the response.

Does anesthesia cost extra?

Ask. Local anesthetic may be included or listed separately.
