Pico Laser
Picosecond lasers deliver very short pulses for pigment, tone and some scars. A single name covers several modes, so a quote should state which one is planned and how many visits are expected.
How it works
The laser releases energy in trillionth-of-a-second bursts, which shatters pigment particles and, with a fractional or diffractive lens, creates tiny zones that prompt skin renewal. Spot work targets freckles or sun spots individually and may leave small scabs. Full-face toning is gentler and repeated. Acne scar modes use a patterned lens and need a series. Cost follows the mode, the area, the number of spots or the full-face pass, and the number of sessions. Results vary by person.
Who it may suit
- Sun spots, freckles and some brown patches
- Diffuse tone concerns in a toning-style plan
- Shallow acne scars and texture using a patterned lens
- People who want a shorter recovery than ablative lasers
The treatment day
- Goal setting. The doctor decides between spot work, full-face toning and scar modes. Each has its own price logic.
- Preparation. The skin is cleaned and numbing cream may be applied for spot or scar modes.
- Laser pulses. Pulses are delivered with eye protection. Spot treatment feels like quick snaps.
- Aftercare instructions. You receive a moisturizing and sun-protection plan, and the interval for the next session.
Aftercare
- Small scabs after spot work usually flake off within a week
- Do not pick at scabs
- Use sunscreen and a gentle moisturizer
- Avoid strong exfoliants until the skin settles
- Contact the clinic if you see blistering, spreading redness or lasting darkening
Things to know first
- Temporary darkening, redness, swelling and, less often, white patches or scarring can occur
- Darker skin tones need cautious settings
- Tanned skin, isotretinoin use and pregnancy usually mean waiting
- Some pigment, especially melasma, may return
- Results vary by person
What the price of pico laser depends on
Start with the goal, because it sets the billing unit. Spot treatment is often charged per spot or per small area, full-face toning is charged per session, and scar work is charged per session with a patterned lens. A quote that does not say which of these it means cannot be compared with another.
The device and handpiece influence the line. Several systems are available, and some clinics charge more for a particular brand or an added lens. Ask the clinic to confirm which system and mode will be used. Numbing cream, aftercare dressings and tax should each be marked as included or extra.
For toning and scars the cost is multiplied by the number of visits. Ask for the expected number and what a package covers. For spot work, ask whether a touch-up for stubborn spots is included or separately charged.
Pico Laser: common questions
Is pico always more expensive than other lasers?
It is often priced higher, but the real difference depends on the mode, the area and the number of sessions. Compare totals for the same goal.
How is spot treatment charged?
Usually per spot or per small zone. Ask for the count and whether a touch-up is included.
Do I need several sessions?
Spot work may need one, while toning and scar plans usually need several. The doctor sets this at the exam.
Is aftercare included?
Ask whether dressings, soothing creams and sunscreen are listed. They are sometimes sold separately.
